Move a OneDrive file or folder to your team or another person
You can give someone else “ownership” of a file or folder by moving it so they (or their team) control it.
A. Move a file/folder to your team’s site
Use this when the work really belongs to the team, not you personally.
Steps
Open OneDrive in your browser.
Go to My files.
Find the file or folder you want to hand off.
Select it (check the circle next to it).
At the top, select Move to.
-
In the panel that opens, choose your Team / SharePoint site.
If you don’t see it, click More locations or Browse sites.
Pick the folder in the Team site where it should live.
Click Move here.
Once it’s moved, the team owns it. Team permissions now control who can see or edit the content.
B. Move a file/folder so another person becomes the owner
Use this when the file or folder really belongs to one other person (for example, you’re handing off a project to a colleague).
There are two ways you can handle this. Use the one that fits what your users are allowed to do.
Option 1 – Move it into a shared team location they can access
If you both have access to a common Team site:
Follow the same steps as above to Move to → Team / SharePoint site.
Let the new person know where you put it.
That person can work from the team site or, if they really want it in their own OneDrive, they can open it and use Move to → My files (their OneDrive).
Option 2 – Share it and let the other person move it into their OneDrive
If IT allows this behavior and you want more of a true “personal handoff”:
You (current owner):
Open OneDrive → My files.
Select the file or folder.
Click Share.
Choose People you choose.
Enter the other person’s name or email.
Make sure they have Can edit permission.
Send the link.
New owner:
Open the link from the email.
Select the file or folder.
Click Move to.
Choose My files (their OneDrive).
Confirm the move.
Now the content is in their OneDrive, and they’re effectively the owner.
