The software that employees can use to make or receive calls using their Blue Ridge CC office phone number from an off campus location is "Cisco Jabber". This software should already be installed on all BRCC employee and loaner laptops.
How to Receive Calls using Jabber off campus:
- Connect the Blue Ridge CC VPN. Here is a link to instructions.
- Locate the "Cisco Jabber" shortcut on your desktop or by clicking on the "Start" button and entering "Jabber" in the search box.
- Ensure you have a microphone and speakers on your computer. We recommend plugging in a USB headset if you plan to frequently use the jabber software on your computer. (The Help Desk can provide a USB headset on loan. Otherwise you can purchase any Windows compatible microphone + headphone USB headset.)
- Double-click to open the Jabber software
- Once the Jabber software is open, you can minimize to keep it running in the background. An icon will appear along the right edge of your screen showing that the software is running. You speakers will make a ringing sound upon an incoming call. (See screen shot below)
How to Place Calls using the Jabber software off campus:

- Double-click to open the Jabber software.
- Placing a call:
- If you are calling another BRCC employee, use the search box to search and call by name. (See screen shot below)
- If you are calling an off campus number, use the number pad icon to directly dial. Note: You must still dial a "9" to place an off campus call. (See screen shot below)
