In order to facilitate online students remotely joining a seated class, most BRCC classrooms have been equipped with new cameras and microphones.

Here is a link to an ~8 minute video that walks through using the new HyFlex classroom technology.

General Steps to use HyFlex Technology:

  1. In your online course shell in MyCourses, schedule a Blackboard Collaborate session for a time period that matches your seated class schedule

  2. At the start of class, join your Collaborate session

  3. Select the appropriate audio input device (usually “USB Audio CODEC”), webcam or document camera. Whichever device you select upon entering your Collaborate session will be the primary camera device. In general, you would pick the device that has the best view of what you initially intend to present. You can easily switch between devices while in Collaborate by following the steps below.

  4. When in Collaborate, use the side menu to switch between:

    1. Sharing an onscreen whiteboard

    2. Share your computer screen or

    3. Select “Share Camera” to switch from your webcam to the document camera

  • "USB Audio CODEC" - This is the high-quality conference microphone. If available, you should always select this device as your Blackboard Collaborate or Zoom audio input device. The microphone is black and sits flat on the surface of the instructor station. Some models have a “mute” button that might need to be presses to enable sound

  • "IPEVO 4K" - This is a high resolution document camera that can also serve as a webcam. When viewing documents or objects up close, make sure the “AF” switch on the top of the device is set to “C” for close-up. When using the IPEVO as a webcam or to show the whiteboard, set it to “S” for standard. Depending on the particular room and instructor needs, you might find it best to use the IPEVO document camera as your primary video input method.

  • "Web cam" - There are multiple different models of web cameras in use. Web cameras are versatile and easily adjustable. Tilt or reorient the webcam as needed to point to where you are teaching or to focus on the whiteboard or your in class student audience. If you want to show documents or small objects, the IPEVO or ELMO document camera might be better.

  • "ELMO" - Some rooms are equipment with Elmo document cameras. The ELMO document cameras are similar in purpose and function to IPEVO document cameras. However, ELMO document cameras are generally strictly meant for viewing documents or objects, they aren't as good at also functioning as a webcam.
