In order to reduce the risk that our critical IT systems become compromised due to a cybersecurity threat, BRCC will configure several commonly used employee IT services to require multi-factor authentication (aka 2-step login verification) starting October 11th.

If you conduct any online banking you are likely already familiar with MFA. This process often involves receiving a code via text message, or a prompt on your smartphone, or a voice phone call when you login to a secure website from a different computer.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is also known as 2-step verification or 2-step login.

Click this link to see a brief explanation of how and why this helps protect your account - and the College as a whole

Systems that require multifactor authentication:

  • Cisco VPN
  • Colleague UI
  • Email account
  • Insider
  • MyBlueRidge
  • MyCourses
  • Watermark (formerly Aviso)
  • Maxient
  • All newly added and future systems that are accessible online

How will this affect you?

  • In general, each time you log into one of the above services from a new device or web browser, you will be prompted to enter a one-time passcode sent to your smartphone or other designated phone or device
  • Occasionally, you might be prompted to enter a one time passcode when accessing one of the above services
  • Get into a habit of keep your phone handy when accessing the above resources in case you are prompted to enter a one time passcode

What should you do?

  • We ask every employee enroll your BRCC Email account in Google's 2-step verification program as soon as is convenient for you
  • If you don't enable 2-step verification on your BRCC email account before October 11th, the next time you log into to your BRCC email account, "The Insider", Office 365, or Aviso, you will automatically be prompted to enroll in 2-Step verification
  • Click the "Get Started" button at the top of this linked webpage to enroll. The process generally takes just a few minutes
  • Never share a one time passcode with anyone and never simply click "Yes, it's me" if you are unsure why you are being prompted for 2-step verification.
  • Specific instructions will be sent to VPN users closer to the September timeframe regarding how to authenticate to the VPN after September 1st.

What if I am somewhere I can't receive text messages?

No problem! If you are connected via wi-fi and have the Gmail app installed on your phone, you can get a notification that will simply prompt you "Yes" or "No" when you try to sign in from a new device.
